Through my teen years, I used to wash and condition my hair every single day. I swore that if I didn’t I’d be a big ol’, greasy mess. There was probably something to that during that highly hormonal time of life, but I know now that the more you wash your hair, the greasier it will be. Your scalp will produce even more oil since you’re constantly stripping out the natural balance it needs. And, it’ll start to take a toll on the health of your strands.

For the past two or three years, I’ve been able to slowly space out washing my hair every three to four days. And, I’m still trying to prolong it further whenever I can. I’ve noticed a huge improvement in the texture of my hair and definitely less split ends. But, let’s be honest. The biggest bonus is an extra half hour of sleep on the days I don’t need to shampoo and condition. YES! Lazy girl for the win.

I’ve been curious about ways to increase the space between washes even more; for both hair health and extra sleep. If you search the blogosphere and do a bit of Googling, you come across all kinds of methods. No Poo, Baking Soda + Apple Cider Vinegar rinsing, Cowashing, and just plain not washing your hair.

Here comes some more honesty, I really can’t be fussed to go to all the trouble and dedication needed for some of these methods. Plus, I really can’t stand the thought of living with greasy hair while it goes through a “detox” period. Who doesn’t love the feeling of a clean scalp?

So, when I got my January Beautybox, I was naturally sceptical, but also curious about one of the products in it. In the box, I got a deluxe sample size of the Unwash Bio-Cleansing Conditioner, a sulfate and paraben free co-washing formula that claims to replace your shampoo. Co-washing or conditioner washing is a method of using a conditioner-like cleanser to wash out dirt, excess oils, and build-up without harsh ingredients that wash away all of the hairs’ natural oils.

The conditioner smells amazing; like a sweet, tart cherry. And, the texture is really nice. Not too thick and not too watery; sort of like a mix between a shampoo and a conditioner. It doesn’t foam up when you work it in, which I don’t mind. I typically need to use a quarter size amount, rinse, and repeat to get the best effect. But, that’s something I already have to do with regular shampoo. So, nothing too different there.

Have you ever had to wash your hair with only shampoo? Then, you’re left with a dry, tangled, horrible mess. I was so afraid that would happen with this conditioner. Surprisingly, the formula really lives up to it’s claims! It washes out dirt, sweat, and any extra oil, but it leaves you with soft and manageable clean hair.

I haven’t left regular shampoo and conditioner behind completely yet. My new haircare routine goes something like this: wash my hair with regular shampoo and conditioner, wait three days, wash my hair with Unwash, wait three days, use Unwash again, wait three days, and then back to regular shampoo and conditioner. I haven’t been doing this long enough to claim it’s made a huge difference, but I love the time saved and I like feeling like I’m giving my hair a bit of a break.
