Before becoming a ToursByLocals guide, each applicant undergoes a rigorous selection process:
- initial application review to determine if the applicant meets our ToursByLocals guide requirements.
- reference and background check through the Thomson Reuters World-Check service. Every 6 months, we re-screen all guides.
- telephone interview
- confirmation that the guide applicant meets both legal requirements and industry best practices in the delivery of their proposed tours.
- confirmation that the applicant readily adheres to ToursByLocals’ business principles.
After acceptance, we provide our guides with:
- all the tools needed to create a professional web presence
- training to help design quality tour offerings
- review of tour offerings for clarity and language before they’re posted
- marketing program to attract potential customers
- appropriate payment in case of ‘no-shows’ or late-notice cancellations
Ongoing quality measures:
- unedited reviews of tours from ToursByLocals travelers
- ongoing support from ToursByLocals’ Guide Support team
- removal from the ToursByLocals system for failure to abide by our business principles

Cynthia was the perfect guide. Efficient, organized, knowledgeable, enthusiastic. We particular enjoyed the group lunch at a top place that she recommended that took care of us very nicely.

Absolutely the best guide we have ever had. So friendly, so helpful, so insightful. Absolutely the best.
Lorena organised a driver for the day in a very new and spacious SUV, and then showed us everywhere we hoped to visit. Lorena even took us for traditional meals and we had the best dim sum in China. We were able to shop, sightsee, eat and enjoy the very best of the city, all while our helpful driver waited for us at each stop. Highly recommended. Definitely the best guide we have ever had.

I chose Etai based on the great reviews he had, I can only say he exceeded all expectations and taught my wife and I for four days as much as he guided us. Our trip would not have been the same without Etai. I would give him 10 stars if I could.

From the moment we met Ricardo we felt we were in good hands. He was very professional, with a bright smile, firm handshake and great attitude. The Pasteis da Nata he produced when we stopped to admire the view was a sweet touch. Quinta do Foz was educational and wines were delicious! A stunning river cruise and finally an excellent gourmet lunch to wrap things off. All along the way we learnt many interesting facts about the history and general life in Portugal. Highly recommend this tour with Ricardo!

We had a fabulous day with Miguel touring the Douro Valley. He was a fountain of interesting information, enjoyable company, personable, well-spoken and flexible and adaptable with our plans/interests. Very nice tour with a lot of useful and interesting informations about the region, the vegetation and behavioural aspects e.g. dealing with the local wildlife. Really to be recommended.
